Common Weeds

  • Chickweed

Chickweed Is somewhat succulent annual that often forms a dense mat. In lawns, it rarely grows higher than 2 inches, but can be taller (4 to 6 inches) and less compact in gardens or under shaded conditions. Again a great way to control weeds is a proper schedule of pre-emergent and post emergent herbicides.

  • Dandelion

Dandelions are a broadleaf perennial that can grow in any soil and are most numerous in full sunlight. In the early spring, new sprouts will emerge from the taproot. Pulling dandelions can be an effective way, but can require a lot of work because you need to remove the entire tap root for it not to grow back. Using a pre-emergent herbicide at the proper time will help keep weeds from germinating. If weeds become present a good post emergent herbicide is a great way to get rid of already germinated weeds.

  • White Clover

White Clover is very prevalent in under-fertilized lawns and grows best in full sun; however, it can also colonize turf areas that receive fertilizer and are partially shaded. IT grows very well throughout the season and can be identified by the white flower that blooms. It can be a pesky weed at times but also some people do not mind having the clover in their yard. it grows in turf yards in patches which can be small or large. There are many post herbicide that can attack and eliminate this weed with ease.

  • Crabgrass

Everyone’s most favorite weed Crabgrass “joking of course”. Crabgrass can be found in lawns , gardens, landscaping beds. Most Fertilizers will contain in the a herbicide called barricade. This is a pre-emergent herbicide that will prevent weeds from germinating. This will help prevent weeds from growing for 6 months but I have found that is not the case. So a consistent weed control program and a healthy turf will be your best defense against weeds.

  • Henbit

Henbit is a common annual weed that can be found in most areas of the U.S. Unfortunately, once it gets into your lawn, it can be a real challenge to remove. An easy way to identify this weed is by the lavender flower that blooms in early spring. This weed will grow in most soil conditions around Virginia and like it was stated can be hard to get under control. Like most weeds the best way to eliminate this is to hit it early before it flowers. Once weeds start to flower they start producing seeds. Some weed seeds can remain dormant in the yard for years. So Again a proper feeding and weed control of your lawn will be the best defense against any of these weeds stated here.

  • Wild Violet

Wild Violet can be identified by their heart shape leaves as ell as their purple, blue, and even yellow flowers that bloom. Once again a post emergent herbicide and preemergent herbicides can be the best defense against these weeds.
